Lady Eagles sweep rival Jourdanton to open season
The Pleasanton and Jourdanton volleyball teams hit the court for the first time this season Tuesday, and the Lady Eagles were able to top their Hwy. 97 rivals.
Pleasanton controlled the match on the way to a 25-12, 25-13, 25-15 sweep. The win followed a loss to Devine earlier in the evening in the teams’ season opener. The Arabians also defeated the Squaws during the tri-match at the Pleasanton ISD Sports Complex.
“The first match we kind of struggled,” Lady Eagles coach Gabriel Aguirre said. “We did some really good things, and [then] we just kind of shut down and didn’t finish like we should’ve. In the second match against Jourdanton, we played from beginning to end. I was really proud of the way they stayed focused throughout the whole match.”
Aguirre said it was that renewed focus that carried them against the Squaws.
“They didn’t let the things that bothered them in the Devine match bother them here,” he said. “They got the ball back, and then we ran off like four or five points to give us big leads.”
The match left Jourdanton coach Joella Gallegos with plenty to work on in practice, including communication and playing together as a team, she said.
“We’ve put in a lot of hard work this week, and unfortunately those efforts didn’t show today on the court,” Gallegos said. “Everybody was just frustrated knowing the hard work we put in and us just falling flat today. [It was] a disappointment, but [I am] still excited to know that we have a long way to go and we’re capable of getting there.”
The Lady Eagles will host an eight-team tournament on Friday and Saturday. Aguirre is looking for the same type of performance from his team.
“Exactly how we played against Jourdanton,” he said. “I think if we can play like that, we’ll be very successful.”
